Hillary Outdoors

Founded by Sir Graeme Dingle in 1972 with Sir Edmund Hillary as patron, Hillary Outdoors is a leading provider of youth outdoor education experiences in Aotearoa NZ . Each year we deliver incredible education experiences from our two outdoor centres - Tongariro and Coromandel.

Hillary Outdoors Discovery Challenge for Homeschooled Students

The Discovery Challenge Programme brings together homeschooled students, who work together in teams, discover new passions, adventure in the outdoors, and even gain unit standards if they wish.

Students participate in a range of activities ranging from kayaking, rock climbing, abseiling, high ropes and environmental programmes. These activities encourage teamwork, expand leadership and risk management skills, strengthen communication, and build resilience and perseverance all in an outdoor environment.

There are two programmes per year specifically for homeschoolers aged 14-18yrs.

We also offer other programmes where homeschoolers mix with other students, such as the 5-Day School Group Programme for Years 9-13, School Holiday Programmes for students aged 14-18yrs, and a nationwide Events Programme.

Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award

Hillary Outdoors is an accredited outdoor provider for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award offered at Tongariro and Coromandel Centres during the school holidays. These locations are a great choice for undertaking the Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award, offering the perfect environment for a very authentic experience of personal discovery and growth; as well as developing skills in self-reliance, perseverance, personal responsibility and service to community.

We provide both Expedition and Exploration Adventurous Journeys for youth between the age of 14 to 24 years, to the following levels: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Gold Residential Project.

Professional Training

Tertiary Programme – Certificate and Tertiary Programme – Diploma: We offer a one year, full-time course of study taught at our Tongariro Centre in the central North Island. This programme will allow you to safely explore numerous outdoor environments and conditions including alpine, bush, rocks and rivers. A big part of the programme involves learning about assessing and managing risk. This course leads onto, and is a prerequisite for, the Diploma course.
